Ah, I see Zuck is spinning again. facebook.com/notes/mark-zuc… Some thoughts...
Firstly, what this announcement is mostly about is the back-end integration of Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram, which is a privacy *problem* because many users of the bought platforms don't want anything to do with Facebook proper...
It's also an antitrust problem, because Facebook lied to EU competition authorities that it would leave WhatsApp as a standalone service when it bought it (the lie already earned it a €110 million fine a couple years back)...
Now, when Zuck talks about privacy, he mostly means privacy from other users, which reflects general trends in social networking. To an extent, he means privacy from Facebook itself and governments via strong encryption stuff, but...
... he also fleetingly refers to more advanced pattern recognition, as a way of identifying bad actors. Of course, pattern recognition is also Facebook's own aim here, because bringing together all these networks helps it to more accurately profile users...
Zuck's reference to dissidents is borderline offensive, given that Facebook has just been caught using phone numbers, that were submitted for 2FA security purposes, as general lookup data. The absolute last thing a dissident needs after they tried to beef up their login security.
My favourite line in Zuck's post is this: "An important part of the solution is to collect less personal data in the first place, which is the way WhatsApp was built from the outset." i.e. before Facebook bought it...
Regarding data localisation, Zuck is effectively saying the company will never bow to Russia's demands to store its citizens' data on Russian soil. So expect Facebook to end up blocked in Russia. Well done, Zuck. No, really!
Anyway, that's all I've got for now. I'm sure others have found other threads to pick at in there.
