I try not to weigh in on what the Forward has become, but I just want to point this out: Each of these headlines creates a fiction that "The Left" and "The Jews" are two separate pools. It's a pre-19th-cent view of Jewish communal life that ignores the facts: We ARE the Left. 1/2
Jews are among Omar's greatest advocates. We're not sitting outside Left tents, forced to drop an essential part of ourselves to enter. These headlines - and the Forward's approach to this from the start - are an attempt to frighten Jews and divide the Left. It's shameful. 2/2
This is not to say that there aren't Jews who aren't Lefty! But it is to say that dichotomizing The Left and The Jews is anachronistic. It cynically denies Jews on the Left our agency and our commitment to both Lefty and Jewish values. (3/2!)
