devolution of the scientific talk

Sending in abstract for meeting in 3 months: this is great timing; I have this really interesting project and I’m sure I’ll have a breakthrough result by then to talk about.

1/
Meeting in 2 months: I’ve been really busy and haven’t made much progress on the project. I doubt I’ll have firm conclusions, but I'll have intriguing results that will excite people and spur discussion.

2/
Meeting in 1 month: Man, classes are taking all of my time. I think I can use parts of an old talk from another meeting 6 months ago, updated with some cool preliminary analyses.

3/
Meeting in 2 weeks: Holy sh*t, why aren't the preliminary results any good? Have my grad students done anything worthwhile? At this point, I don't even remember what was in the abstract.

4/
Meeting in 3 days: F*ck it. I’m just going to give the same talk I gave 6 months ago at another meeting. I hope no one notices.
