I crammed as many indie publishers as I could into this, but they only give me 600 words/week. chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/boo…
I demonstrated a definite midwestern bias, but it's for the Chicago Tribune and also, the Midwest is home to some amazing indie publishers.
Basically, I got tired of regular reader people asking me if I'd heard of this new phenomenon (ex. Valeria Luiselli), and telling them that person is great, but also, not entirely new.

These graphs are the nut of the problem of writing assessment. They are focused on the product students produce, but to understand how students are developing as writers, we must know more about the process being employed in service of that product also... 2/ cc: @MichaelPetrilli
...we need to know much more about what students know about their own process (what I call the "writer's practice" and how they're able to apply this practice to new and unfamiliar writing-related problems. What has been assessed by reformers doesn't do this 3/ @MichaelPetrilli

I thought people were kidding that Beto didn't have any policy info on his website, but they're really not kidding, unless I'm looking at the wrong website.
His logo does look nice on the merch, though.
Mayor Pete's website is low on the issues info too, though I've heard him talk more substantively in interviews than Beto. Mayor Pete's march is decidedly inferior, though.

I urge all writing teacher, heck...all teachers to listen to this short @Tom_Newkirk piece in which he interviews a student about writing fiction and how empowering the student finds it. art19.com/shows/the-hein…
The student contrasts the empowerment of writing fiction with the constraints of how he asked to perform writing in school. It's a little bit heartbreaking. I believe writing fiction should be part of any student's school writing diet.

Well, okay.

Maybe it isn’t obvious that a desire to sweep away regulations and gun rights and “entitlements” is authoritarian.

So I’ll explain.

Let’s start with regulations.
1/ Regulations are anti-authoritarian, because regulations say that everyone lives under the same rules. This is also known as rule of law. You can’t have rule of law without laws. Regulations = laws.

Authoritarians want to sweep away existing rules so their word becomes law.
2/ This is often done by means of a cult of leadership, as explained👇

The leader says “I alone can solve our nation’s problems!”

The followers believe (or pretend to believe) that the leader’s instincts are superior to the logic of the ruling elites.

For most of U.S. history, the consensus was that the Second Amendment allowed for a “well regulated militia.”

In other words, the amendment was taken literally.
1/ Then came the 60s, when so much changed: The Civil Rights movement, the women’s movement, etc.

The Supreme Court in the 50s & 60s was liberal, giving us, among other things, criminal procedure and defendant rights based largely on the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixths Amendments.
2/ I’m writing Thurgood Marshall right now, and let’s just say what happened often to blacks in the 1930s when questioned by police wasn’t pretty.

These SCOTUS rulings enraged the far right wing, who denounced the decisions as hampering local police, and federal court overreach.
