1- Our best science fiction and fantasy writers help us see the future as it is unfolding in the present. They force us to view our worlds through a different lens. They make us confront uncomfortable truths. And they compel us into taking action.
2 - With that in mind, I'm recommending that we all re-read @neilhimself's American Gods. For me, it was a brilliant story about religion, about tribalism, and about the role technology plays in changing how we think, act, learn, love. (It's also my favorite of Neil's works.)
3 - I'm also recommending we re-read All Systems Red, by Martha Wells, which asks what happens when companies competing in a free market economy result in AI that threatens humanity. (It's not just doom and gloom -- it's pretty funny.)
4 - If you never read China Mountain Zhang by Maureen F. McHugh, now is a good time to pick it up. The world she explores is a US in which a communist revolution has erupted after a period of economic decline and China has risen to become the new global superpower.
5 - I could go on all day. But for those reading the thread, please add your recommendations for good books to read right now that will help us see the world in a different light. Ostensibly so we can start acting like better humans.
