Everybody is (rightfully!) very excited about the North Bergen High School kids’ version of Alien, staged as a high school play, with all props made from recycled materials. Here are some links about the show!
The NBHS kids made an incredible trailer for their production. The cast members all look perfect for their parts.
The story first broke out broadly from this Reddit thread a few days ago, featuring some of the most striking early photos of the production. reddit.com/r/LV426/commen…
One of the most exciting milestones for the kids was when Adam Savage caught sight of their work and was excited by it — the highest praise possible for amateur prop makers!
A teacher at the school had promised to edit together video of the entire production later, but for now the best video is this shot of the initial facehugger scene. Just amazing. imgur.com/gallery/VafIHtX

The kids at @NorthBergenHS pulled all of this off despite their school being ranked the *most underfunded school in New Jersey*. Here’s hoping they’ll let us know how to show support (@DonorsChoose can help!) and that this opens doors for all of them in the future.

Does anybody want a thread of analysis/perspective on the Apple event today? Is that still a thing we do? What if I promise it'll all be very insightful & valuable?
Ok! Some fun quick takes: it’s important to understand the difference in annual revenue (ARPU) that different tech/media companies make from their users. Comcast or Verizon make an order of magnitude more dollars from you each year than Netflix does. Apple wants to be up there.
As a natural result of this tension, Apple is now competing with Disney for the first time. Apple’s subscription content services will be in a zero-sum competition with Disney+. It’s a schism akin to when Apple found out Google was building Android.

I have steadfastly been against active shooter drills since the horrendous practice was first introduced to terrorize children, but after having had a mandatory emergency briefing at our office building today, I’m against them for adults as well. Firmly.
First, absolutely none of the common practices or advice about how to deal with such situations are grounded in any research or statistical analysis. We don’t do training for falling down the stairs, and it’s an infinitely more common cause of workplace injuries.
Second, the official repsonsible for addressing our team casually mentioned that the FDNY advice for what to do in an active shooter situation *directly contradicts* the DHS advice for what to do in the same situation. This was shared with zero concern for the obvious absurdity.

As you may know, today is the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web. Hooray! #Web30 #ForTheWeb So, let's look at a really important part of its history: Did you know, from the start, the very first web browser was designed to help you read *and write* the web? This is IMPORTANT.
The web wasn't meant to be a jack in the box, where you turn the crank and every once in a while it scares the hell out of you. It was meant to be a box of legos — where you could play with it, sure, but you could take it apart & build anything you could imagine. We *create* it.
Perhaps the original sin of the web was that this ability was lost. Some of it was the primitive tools of the time made it hard to easily create web pages. But there were big commercial interests that wanted to separate consumption and creation on the web. And they won. For now.

As a #ML2 author, very excited to see this paper finally out! The headline that 50% of effects replicate buries the lead a bit. For me, the major finding here concerns heterogeneity. What's heterogeneity, you ask? Gather round...
Heterogeneity describes how much effects being replicated vary from lab to lab, *beyond* sampling error. Sampling error says we expect that by chance, some labs overestimate the true effect size, others underestimate. Heterogeneity says how much more we expect effects to vary.
If differences between labs are to explain differences in replicability, there MUST be sizable heterogeneity in effects. The magnitude of the between site differences limits how much variance heterogeneity can explain.
