Elizabeth Warren has a housing plan -- and like every one of her policy proposals, it looks really good! 1/ medium.com/@teamwarren/my…
It calls for expansing the housing supply, especially of rental units, in part through public investment, in part with incentives for state and local governments to loosen restrictive zoning rules. All solid economics, no gimmicks 2/
I should add that she's quite brave in not pandering to NIMBYism. This is the kind of plan that should have broad bipartisan support; it would even have significant effects on economic growth, by helping people move to where the good jobs are 3/
So will it get any coverage? Or are we only interested in people who jump on tables? (I'm not a Beto-hater, but this is getting ridiculous) 4/

Now we have a perfect illustration: Rep. Andy Barr invited AOC to get mugged by, I mean, talk to coal miners in his KY district about the Green New Deal. But it turns out that there aren't any coal miners in his district! 2/ businessinsider.com/alexandria-oca…
And when AOC accepted, of course Barr came up with a weak excuse to disinvite her. You see, she might have talked about his district's real interests, and actually won some voters over 3/

Gotta say, some of the coverage of the Sanders/Center for American Progress spat is extremely weird, showing signs that Clinton derangement syndrome is still alive and well even though Hillary isn't running 1/
CAP may have been associated with the Clintons in the past, but it has also been a very effective policy shop, playing an important role in getting the Affordable Care Act passed. And it's continuing to play that role. 2/
So it's sad and a bit scary to see @neeratanden getting the Hillary treatment. And yes, I think there's a fair bit of sexism involved too. 3/

Google Search would have to be spun off from Ads but nothing will change w/your search experience. Nevermind that 87% of Google's revenue comes from ads; when you don't need to worry about realities of business, it's easy to imagine how companies will just magically make it work.
FINALLY. Google's acquisition of Waze will be reversed, and only tech nerds who use the obscure Waze app will be able to benefit from less traffic. All of the less-wealthy, less-educated people can go back to sitting in traffic in between jobs.

New blogpost coming shortly putting Senator Warren's housing bill in context, but a few big-picture thoughts in the meantime. Summary: there's a lot in this bill for traditional affordable housing advocates, YIMBYs, and housing economists to like.

Any credible plan to improve affordability _must_ address housing supply, especially to tackle ways in which local govts make it hard to build apartments. Warren's bill does this front-and-center (offers infrastructure $ to local govts if they reform zoning).
(I still have doubts about whether design of voluntary infrastructure grants will induce seriously exclusionary suburbs to participate, but w/in limits of federal authority over land use, this is a credible attempt.)
