“I am a blue collar pensioner who left school at 16 and voted Remain.” That’s. Nice.
All the pebbles on the beach are unique. But the waves move them all in the same way, making beautiful patterns and changes. You are all unique pebbles. But I study the beach.

All of these things can be true:

1. This is a sincerely held reading of where we are politically

2. It is a reading heavily bound up with a particular ideological stance

3. Those with opposite ideological views expressed similar views with similar vehemence in pre-Brexit yrs
Its also worth recalling (1) that Remain voters' answers on a range of perceptual measures such as views about the state of the economy swung far further in a negative direction than can credibly be accounted for by any objective shift
And (2) that on basically any measure of intolerance that has been asked, those who express a strong tribal "Remain" identity express greater hostility towards "Leave" voters than "Leave" partisans do towards "Remainers".

There’s a by-Election in Newport West today. It will *probably* be a dull Lab hold but, like part by-elex it may spring a surprise. Some sources of uncertainty: 1. Seat had the same LT incumbent for over 30 yrs so we don’t know how voters will react to an open contest.
2. There is usually an anti-incumbent and/or anti-system dynamic in by-elex. 3. Voters are unusually volatile and unhappy with all mainstream parties 4. We have no idea how, if at all, ongoing Brexit crisis will impact on voter behaviour.
5. Both extremes of the political spectrum have high profile candidates standing. Ultra Brexit/nationalist/socially conservative voters have Neil Hamilton for UKIP; ultra-Remain/cosmopolitan/socially liberal have Amelia Womack (deputy leader of Greens)

Endless re-runs of these args about class show that a political system built around class divides for many decades finds it really hard to accommodate new electoral divides. Primary divides on PV, like practically everything in Brexit, are education and identity.
Working class graduates behave like middle class graduates. Working class school leavers behave like middle class school leavers. The critical Q to predict someone’s Brexit stance is not “what do you do?” Or “How much do you earn?” Its “Did you go to university?”
Very hard for parties and political analysts socialised into a class/economic framing for everything to get their heads around this though, so they gravitate constantly to explanations about how it is "really" class or economics that explains these new divides

One of the brilliant points made recently regarding the dangers of social media is that you're not supposed to know that many opinions of yourself. Be that a selfie or your thoughts, you shouldn't be exposed to that many people's assessment of you as an individual
Following on from a conversation with a friend, he goes one step further: not only are we not supposed to know that many external opinions of ourselves, but we're also not supposed to be in a position to be dishing out so many opinions for the world to judge in the first place.
Before, self-development and the refining of one's personal mindset and outlook on life was an internal/personal journey - a journey not visible to the outside world.

One of the (many) things I love about high school is the sophistication of the work Ss are given. Murrow's teachers are thoughtful and the work is rigorous, and most Ss are curious and rise to the challenge. Back in Nov 2018, I had a patron that proved it.
*BACKGROUND: My colleague taught a research class for APUSH. Ss were to research an obscure Revolutionary War figure and find primary source evidence of their purported history using databases and or print.

One thing that's been reaffirmed in me today through Twitter is just how little compassion and respect those who have, have for those who have not. It's so utterly ingrained in the fabric of the country that request for assistance, is a weakness which needs destroying...
And should be called out, to the embarrassment of the person asking for help.

This could be a long one, haven't decided yet, but I'm obviously talking about the Twitter activity of a certain popular LBC host...
So let's start the day labelling a couple hundred thousand people holocaust deniers, or at very least people who placate holocaust denial. Kind of impact does that have?

This is Hebron in the West Bank.
Hebron is the home of one of Islam's holy sites, the Ibrahimi Mosque.
It also happens to be a Jewish holy site named after Abraham as well.

Here’s a fun story for you. I spent 3 years learning about this guy, Phil Kitzer, the greatest con artist you’ve never heard of. 1/
In the 1960s, he was arrested for embezzling millions of $ out of 15 insurance companies in Minneapolis and Chicago, bankrupting them. 2/
Kitzer spent 8 days testifying in his own defense. He was hypnotic, charismatic. After 3-month trial, the jury believed & acquitted him. 3/
