The best technology is infinitely adaptable. This handsome tram from 1895 in Kyoto first ran with overhead electric cables, but since 2014 it has been fitted with an adapted internal lithium battery similar to what an electric car uses. Not bad for 120+ year old public transport.
Meanwhile in the rest of the world Australia orders Korean trains too wide for its tunnels (“It takes a special type of incompetence to buy trains that don’t fit through the tunnels”) and in France they order trains that are too wide for the platforms. telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews…
Maybe my favorite is Gothenburg in Sweden that ordered trams from Italy made for the Mediterranean climate. The few trams that didn't rust up in the harsh Swedish winter developed mold in the summer. sverigesradio.se/sida/artikel.a…
I like the 救助網 (Kyujoami), the "rescue net" mounted on the front of many older trams. It was to scoop up dropped obstacles or even people rather than running them over. I wonder how it worked in practice? The driver would switch the nets from front to the back when reversing.
