Milton Friedman & Friedrich Hayek
.@DanielZamoraV who found this picture of Friedman and Hayek in the Hoover Archive says it is from the 1978 Mont Pelerin Society meetings in Hong Kong.
In 1979 Milton Friedman went back to Hong Kong, to film the first episode of “Free to Choose”, a PBS broadcast in which Friedman explains Hayek’s idea of the coordination function of price signals, work Friedman taught to his students for three decades
Friedman explained Hayek’s price signal idea again in his 1980 book *Free To Choose* written with his wife Rose Friedman (pdf) urbanlab.org/articles/money…

“In 1979, when we were filming our TV show, “Free to Choose,” I stood on the border between Hong Kong and mainland China. The contrast that I could see with the naked eye on the two sides of that artificial line was so striking as to be almost unbelievable.” — Milton Friedman
In 1980 Milton Friedman first traveled to The People’s Republic of China at the invitation of the ruling socialist party .. object.cato.org/sites/cato.org…
Elsewhere Friedman says that *Free To Choose* was Filene’s between March 1978 and October 1978 thedailyhatch.org/2013/05/03/fri…
Makes me think that Milton Friedman filmed the *Free To Choose* episodes just before or after the Mont Pelerin meetings in Hong Kong in 1978.

Milton Friedman on C-SPAN discussing Friedrich Hayek, *The Road to Serfdom* and the case for a free society — video —
1/ “My interest in public policy and political philosophy was rather casual before I joined the faculty of the University of Chicago. Informal discussions with colleagues stimulated a greater interest, which was reinforced by Friedrich Hayek’s powerful book The Road to Serfdom,
2/ .. by my attendance at the first meeting of the Mont Pelerin Society in 1947, and by discussions with Hayek after he joined the university faculty in 1950.” — Milton Friedman
"I asked Estonia Prime Minister Mart Laar where his government got the idea for these [free market economic] reforms. Do you know what he replied? He said, 'We read Milton Friedman and F. A. Hayek'."
