My spouse was just turned down for a job that asked him to complete a 40-hour test. Sure, I'm pissed that the only feedback they gave him was a "thanks, but we're moving forward with someone else," but I'm LIVID that this company is setting a standard with tests like these.
One, a 40-hour test presumes candidates don't have FT work. You can't possibly do this while holding a full-time job. My spouse was working OT at his current job, so literally every waking hour of his life for THREE WEEKS was work. And half of it was working for free.
Two, a candidate's reel/portfolio/samples should be enough to show what kind of work they can do. If you're left scratching your head over their skill level after receipt of these things, you can ask for a small sample. A small one. And that STILL constitutes free work.
Three, if they had paid him for this test, it would have been a different story. But you know what this ended up being? Garbage. Because he can't use it (the assets are proprietary), and the company won't use it (the assets are incomplete).
He has nothing to show for working himself to exhaustion just to prove he knows how to do the job. I saw how much work he got done, and there's no way it would take less than 40 hours to complete the test. In fact, it would likely take more
Four, they offered feedback. Now, one could anticipate this meant they would give helpful tips for how to improve certain things. What to keep. What to cut. All they said was (paraphrased), "Wow! That's a lot of work! Can't wait to see it when it's done!" Barf.
This doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of how morally bankrupt I find this whole matter. This can't possibly be the standard they set for prospective candidates -- it is SHAMEFUL.
