"It's How You Say it"

Live-tweets from the Farage rally in #Nottingham rally looking at their communication and oratory.
First, a bit of background.

I do online marketing and I've studied and taught public speaking. So this thread isn't about the politics but the message and how it's being expressed.
I'm in the queue, looking at the demographics.

Unsurprisingly it's very white, average age around 60 with a scattering of 20 somethings.

More women than expected with a fair few couples so maybe 5:1 male/female split.
Right, I'm in.

First observations. A lot of money has been spent. Big piles of Brexit Party comex boards at the entrance, big on-stage graphics, glossy A3 posters on every seat.

Then there's the venue...
The Albert Hall (Nottingham) is a posh, 700 seater auditorium. Not cheap but they are charging £2.50 per head so off-setting their costs a little bit.

It's about 2/3rds full with ten minutes to go.
The audience is not the flag waving, red faced crowd. More middle class Tory in look and sound.

A few Union Jack t-shirts but mostly pastel coloured shirts, plain t-shirts and summer dresses.

The security is in smart black suits with ties.
It's starting.

The warm-up act is Richard Tice (Chair of Brexit Party) doing a good job. A bit of pantomime leading of boos and cheers.
As a speaker, Richard Tice is very good. Working without notes, moving around, addressing the whole audience.

The content was spot on for a warm-up act. Bit of humour, audience participation, up beat.
Anastasia Rees Mogg takes the stage with a blast of pop music.

She's talking from the podium. Initial impression she's quite a good speaker.
Not as experienced as a speaker but Anastasia Rees Moog is still good.

Well prepared, speaking confidently from the podium. Bit too much body movement. If you are going to be that animated then move away from the podium.
Farage just walked on, through the crowd shaking hands, loud music. Very much like a boxer, darts player snooker player etc.
Farage still going on.

Notes & observations when he's done.
Just finished speaking to a standing ovation.

Richard Tice back on. (claiming to be ordinary people!)
Ok, quick review of Farage's speech from as a piece of oratory.

He good but not that good. He does all the right things but not perfectly.

His movements are stiff, like he has a broom up his arse. His voice was flat, almost constantly shouting. Needs more vocal range.
Building up to the climax, he fluffed it a bit. Not disastrously, probably no one else really noticed but he just missed the natural rhythm.

Farage's appearance in a double-breasted jacket with gold buttons is trademark Farage but is neither casual not statesman-like.
They are doing question at the moment. The questions are on cards, not live from the audience.

Maybe they are genuine but they are suspiciously like prepared prompts for Farage & Mogg to deliver a bit of a speech.
Meeting finishing. Will continue thread with more details once I get clear.
I have beer, so a chance to reflect.

* Lots of money involved
* Slick
* Professional graphics, big video screens and quality audio

Compared to say UKIP or even Lib Dems, this event was very professionally done.
The whole event was very much Tory in terms of audience and general feel with none of the UKIP flag-waving and no wannabe-Nuremberg rally feel.

In fact, I didn't see a Union Jack anywhere.
The content was as you would expect for a political rally - entertaining for the troops but light on policy.

To be completely honest, there was a complete absence of policy. Even brexit was rarely mentioned with WTO only being mentioned once.
The reoccurring theme running through all the speakers, so presumably the party message, is:

* Democracy
* Betrayal
* Proud

Plus, expressed in a number of ways, all MPs are spineless, incompetent money grabbers.
Farage's ambition is to capture the anger people have with parliament and direct it into electoral success, not in Europe but in Westminster.

With Anastasia Rees Moog's involvement and the general feel of the event, it clear Farage target is dissatisfied Tories.
To close this rambling thread.

Farage is backed by serious money, and is peddling dog-whistle politics.

He's dangerous to the Tories and his resurgence will slow the Remain campaign but no more.

Ultimately The Brexit Party is a vanity project built around one man's ego.
