Diversion programs exist to provide people charged with minor offenses—like petty theft or simple drug possession—with an off-ramp that shields them from the lifelong burden of a criminal record.

But a new rule from the Trump admin would undermine their very purpose.

The proposed rule would force federal jobseekers to reveal if they've participated in diversion programs—a major step backwards when it comes to fair chance hiring for federal jobs.

If Trump cares at all about the First Step Act he doesn’t miss an opportunity to brag about, he should withdraw the rule immediately.

In the meantime, it's incumbent on #justicereform advocates across the political spectrum to stop the rule from taking effect.

Following decades of overcriminalization, 1 in 3 Americans now have some type of criminal record.

In the digital era, any criminal record—even an old marijuana conviction—can stand in the way of jobs, housing, education, and more for years.

As America reckons with the toll that mass incarceration & the war on drugs have taken—particularly on low-income folx & communities of color—we must ensure that families & communities ravaged by the war on drugs can move on with their lives.

BREAKING: A federal judge has (again!) struck down Trump's cruel policy allowing states to take Medicaid away from unemployed & underemployed workers. wapo.st/2FGcEjP
Make no mistake -- "work reporting requirements" were always a backdoor to dismantling Medicaid.

*Case in point: Some 18,000 struggling workers in Arkansas have already lost Medicaid under the state's policy.

Every time I tweet about voter disenfranchisement, people reply, well if you're a "rapist" or "murderer" you should lose your right to vote.

The truth is overwhelmingly those being disenfranchised are young Black & Brown people convicted of offenses like petty theft.
No one should lose their right to vote, but people need to understand what it means to have a felony conviction. It certainly doesn't mean you have been convicted of rape or murder.
And in many cases the conduct could have been charged as a misdemeanor. Or depending on the DA assigned to your case, you could have negotiated a plea bargain that resulted in you ending up with no criminal record. The criminal justice system is random.

CRIMINAL COURT, DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN. I'm working arraignments first night of Labor Day weekend. Also day one of @NYCMayor's super hyped new marijuana policy, where most people are not supposed to get arrested for possession of small amounts of weed. Let's see how that plays out.
Seems like a lot of people don't realize you may not get arrested, but you will get a summons, & the summons will be for the exact same charge. You still have to appear in court, just summons court. This doesn't address racial disparity at all, at most it changes the venue.
So far no weed cases have come through, but that's because hardly any cases have come through. That's because a lot of police are on vacation through Sunday & so there have been very few arrests. Arrest numbers are always directly proportional to the number of cops on the street.
