So I’m in a Dunkin Donuts in rural NJ, picking up coffee for the road, and Casey calls from the parking lot: “Warren is calling for universal free public higher ed.”
“But it turned out that tuition was just $50 a semester. This was a quality, public education — and I could afford it on a part-time waitressing salary.” This is what public higher ed used to be, what it should be, what it can be.
“A public college education is like a public K-12 education — a basic public good that should be available to everyone with free tuition and zero debt at graduation.” —Elizabeth Warren
Warren is also calling for the cancellation of the vast bulk of student debt that currently exists. All but the wealthiest would get relief, many would see total relief, and the ultra rich would pay for it all.
I’ll tweet about the details later, but Warren’s plan for cancelling student debt is really exciting.
Holy crap. “Ban for-profit colleges from receiving any federal dollars (including military benefits and federal student loans), so they can no longer use taxpayer dollars to enrich themselves while targeting lower-income students, servicemembers, and students of color.”
Oh, and she wants a federal ban on considering an applicant’s citizenship status or past criminal record in college admissions.
Dang. I gotta get out of this parking lot, but dang. More later.
