The current trajectory of public higher ed is unsustainable. There's two paths forward. Deciding which one we take should start with a discussion of which vision is most in line with our values. insidehighered.com/blogs/just-vis…
The founder of The Rise Fund, which is backing ASU's InStride, was snared in the college admissions scandal allegedly paying a 250k bribe to get his son into USC. Can you imagine him deciding InStride is sufficient for his child?
The Warren plan v. InStride debate is an example of @AnandWrites argument in Winners Take All. The ultra wealthy have tilted the field in their favor to the point they can straight up bribe a kid's way into college. Meanwhile, the rest of us are left with education scraps.
ASU is striving to be the colossus of the scraps by monetizing every aspect of the institution, including its students. insidehighered.com/digital-learni…
Even if the ASU vision of the future survives, the nature of scale and the market says there can only be a handful of online education providers. Imagine a higher ed landscape of 3-5 massive online U's, the Ivy League & other elites, state flagships, and not much else.
I cut a line from the post linked at the top of the thread about this being a "fight for the soul of education" because I thought it was too melodramatic, but it wasn't inaccurate. If we don't make this stand now, it's going to be too late. Honestly, it may already by too late.
