There are numerous inaccuracies in this CJR article about my firing from The Markup cjr.org/analysis/the-m…. Thank you to @matthewi for making speedy corrections.
@matthewi First, I did not object to formal performance assessments for myself and my team. @thejefflarson was in charge of building the performance management system that would be used for the newsroom. He had not completed that task at the time of my departure.
@matthewi @thejefflarson Second, it is not true that I refused coaching. I began working to get a coaching contract in November 2018. Because of paperwork delays, the contract took several months to get executed.
Third, it is not true that I did not read the management books suggested by Gardner. I read Donald Rumsfeld’s “Rumsfeld’s Rules” and Ichak Adizes’ “Managing Corporate Lifecycles” plus others not suggested by Gardner.
Aside: my favorite management book so far has been Radical Candor radicalcandor.com/the-book/
Fourth, It is incorrect that I didn't “pursue” my employment contract “until near the end of the relationship.” On December 24, 2018, I introduced my lawyer to the Markup CFO to begin work on the contract.
Fifth, the email firing me did not say that “I had failed as manager.” It said that she had lost confidence in me.
Finally, I am horrified that Gardner shared with CJR a spreadsheet she made that ranked employees and job candidates on criteria such as tech skepticism. This spreadsheet also ranked people on their “class” (poor, working, middle etc.) that I only learned of 24 hours ago.
Deleted previous tweet and retweeting to tag the correct @mathewi.

I have asked @mathewi to delete the spreadsheet. He assured me that there were “no names” in the version shared with him. I hope that is true.
