Some personal news: today is my last day at ProPublica. I’ve loved my time here, but I’m starting a crazy adventure. I want to see if I can scale up my style of tech-driven investigations by building a newsroom around it. /1
If ever there was a time when journalists needed to work harder to analyze the impacts of technology on society, this is it. So @thejefflarson and I are going to give it a try. /2
We are in the what-the-fuck-are-we-doing phase right now — properly referred to in the tech industry as “stealth mode.” So we don’t have any details to share right now, but we will keep you posted. Stay tuned! /3
And in the meantime, I want to take a few moments to thank my brilliant colleagues at ProPublica who are doing the lord’s work every day here. I am honored to have spent time learning with and from them. /4
Just a few reminders of the work that makes this place great - @reportertopher’s amazing data analysis of the tragedy of Walking While Black. propublica.org/series/walking…
Nikole Hannah-Jones’ unmasking of the rebirth of segregated schools in America.propublica.org/article/segreg…
/5
.@gingerthompson’s horrifying tales of the human costs of America’s long-past-its-sell-date drug war.
propublica.org/article/dea-op…
@heathervogell’s tireless advocacy for vulnerable children being abused by institutions that were supposed to care for them. propublica.org/article/school…
/6
And then there are the master wordsmiths behind the scenes such as my heroic editor @dangolden and PP’s fearless leaders @stephenengelberg and @robinfields, who are never too tired or stressed to perform emergency surgery on my tortured prose. /7
I could go on and on. But the Tl;dr is that I love the folks here and will miss them dearly. Thank you to ProPublica and I’ll keep y’all posted on my new endeavor. /end
And speaking of my need for wordsmiths, I added the wrong handle for my brilliant editor @DanLGolden in my thread! What better proof that he is indispensable. All journalists should try to work for him one day if they can.
