The best thing about Robert E. Lee is he’s dead.
We should’ve known how pathologically incapable we are as a society of bringing consequences to powerful white dudes when we made a hero of a general who led a treasonous uprising that killed hundreds of thousands of Americans to protect the institution of slavery.
We shouldn’t make statues that look like Robert E Lee, we should make piñatas.
Next to every statue of Robert E Lee should be a smaller statue of Osama bin Laden.

Smaller because bin Laden didn’t kill nearly as many Americans.

If there is one thing I would encourage everybody to do, candidate and voter, is to recognize the extent to which so many of us have accepted and taken on the framework of those with whom we fundamentally disagree, and stop it wherever we see it.

The hell we don't. Everyone should want open borders. Open borders indicate such peace with our neighbors, such fulfillment of basic human need, that borders become unnecessary.

Everybody should want that as an end goal. We should say so.

500 billionaires actually are the problem, actually.
If 500 people were hording 55% of all fresh water for their own personal use* the global draught would be the fault of those 500 and anybody saying otherwise would be looked at as a soft-headed fool or a danger to us all.

*by the way that will happen soon, because billionaires.
And sure the 500 people wouldn't ONLY drink the water themselves, but they would choose who could have water and who couldn't and they'd choose people who benefited them specifically.

The fact that some people were still getting water wouldn't make the situation not a problem.

I appreciate the (renewed, once again) Twitter discussion of Robert E. Lee: how good a general he was, how he came to command the Confederate armies, and so forth. Everybody knows his name being invoked by the President is just part of a cover story, right? [Thread]
I mean, Donald Trump has no serious interest in Robert E. Lee (or indeed in anyone not named Donald Trump). He was just speaking up for white-right supporters of his, who two years ago used the pretext of Confederate statues being removed in Charlottesville to hold a rally.
At this “Unite the Right” rally, these Trump admirers chanted, inveighed and otherwise raged against racial minorities, Jews, and women, giving voice to prejudices and resentments Trump himself shares, or is at least prepared to indulge in people willing to praise him.

1. Robert E Lee was such a *NOT* great general that he committed treason to lead the army of a country of traitors, and he lost that army’s only war, a war the traitorous country started, and when he surrendered upon losing that war, the country ceased to exist entirely.
There are not very good ppl on both sides of the confederate statue debate.
There are people who do not wish to beatify the traitors who lost their own ill-conceived racist war, and there are the people who think the Klan, the Nazis, and white supremacists are very good people.
IN ACTUAL FACTUAL FACT:
Robert E. Lee was a piece of shit who fought for HIS right to inherit people held in slavery by his wife’s family, because why tf not, I mean you already think owning humans is okay, why not own the humans your wife would otherwise own? Maybe own her too?

That’s from a letter he wrote to the Times to “correct” a report that he ignored the wishes of his father-in-law, who asked that his slaves be freed on his death. He freed them according to the will, which said within five years.

During those years, he ordered lashings.

Robert E. Lee owned 200 slaves (which he famously tortured) then led a rebellion to extend slavery which killed 620,000 people.

Saying you're not a racist, you just love Robert E. Lee is like saying you're not an antisemite, you just love Hitler.

i also have not left my house today and will now tweet several scenarios that never occurred.
wow, was just at the grocery store and i saw a man in a maga hat. i whispered "diversity" at him and his hat burst into flames and he ran screaming through the produce section.
can't believe it folks. saw an infowarrior at the laundromat and someone mentioned that it's passover and he gasped and broke out in hives. left without even getting his stuff out of the dryer.
