This is one of the reasons I have doubts about reform. Believing that the purpose of this life (dunya) is a test of your comittment to divine law is a serious barrier to change. When you're warned that compromising the doctrine earns you a ticket to hell, why would you risk it?
I used to think exactly like this & didn't see myself as extreme at all. I just thought I was fulfilling my duties as a servant of Allah & doing the bare minimum to avoid hell. Man-made ideas such as LGBT rights didn't fit into that equation so I just blocked it out.
Mentally & emotionally, it's a really difficult position to be in. It's much easier to ignore the questionable morals promoted by the doctrine & focus on perfecting your practice of it to renew your conviction that you're doing it for the right reason.
I truly sympathise with the internal conflict. I just hope that these people realise that there's an alternative that frees them of the doubt. There's an alternative that allows them to embrace their true potential & make the most of the dunya. There's an alternative to Islam.
