Reading this makes my blood run cold. I don't understand how loyalty to ideas such as honour and purity culture, can be maintained at the expense of one's basic humanity. These parents intentionally destroyed their child over many years & involved her siblings in the abuse.
Shafilea deserved better. All children, irrespective of their cultural & religious backgrounds deserve the same rights. We must not prioritise cultural sensitivity over condemnation of child abuse. We must be willing to recognise it among all communities & support all victims.
Cultural relativism allows these abuses to continue unchallenged until they result in something like an honour killing. We must step up & take ownership of the situation before it gets to this point.
