I’m deeply humbled to be in the presence tonight of Chinese activists who risked their lives and lost many friends and loved ones 30 years ago in the Tiananmen Square protests. Every crucifixion needs a witness.
There’s a time when we need to turn people’s ears into eyes and their eyes into ears. That’s how we shift the moral narrative and reorder speech.
If it were not for racist voter suppression, there would be no Trump presidency, no Trump tax plan, no “zero tolerance” immigration policy. We don’t know everything that happened with Russia, but we know what racist voter suppression did in 2016. We must reorder our speech.

Nearly one year ago, my #PoorPeoplesCampaign co-chair @liztheoharis and I were arrested with many others at the Capitol attempting to shine a light on the struggle and fight of the nation’s 140M Poor and low-income.
Today we return to Capitol Hill, two theologians donning religious vestments and stoles reminding those who invoke the Bible that Jesus was a poor man.
We return alongside members of our movement who represent poor and low income communities across the country to testify in front of the House Budget Committee not to lobby Congress, but to reveal the faces behind the facts of poverty.

The #PPCMoralCongress Presidential Forum showed the power of moral fusion organizing. It showed the world this is not a movement FOR the poor, it's a movement WITH the poor.
Yesterday's forum wasn't about the candidates. It was about the #PoorPeoplesCampaign family that came together and declared we're not waiting on the system to be loud about the crisis, WE'RE going to be loud about the crisis.
We're adding faces to the facts, forcing the media + politicians to pay attention, and refusing to be siloed. We're fighting together against systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, the war economy, and religious white nationalism. And we're not done yet.

I know there are those who say our concern as the people of God should be private soul-saving, private devotion, private praise, & personal morality that addresses issues of the inner man only.
There are people who would limit the voice of the faithful to the categories of abortion, homosexuality & prayer in schools in a way that violates the ultimate requirement of God that we love one another.
I know there are those who espouse some kind of weird theology that places God on the side of private ownership at the expense of the poor, on the side of mass gun ownership & support for the death penalty as some sort of divine sacrifice.

Thirty years ago in the spring of 1989, as the world’s most populous country teetered on the edge of freedom, I received a late-night phone call in my apartment in Beijing: The Chinese Army was invading its own capital.
Students made roads impassable by setting up barricades to block the army, so I got on my bicycle & pedaled furiously toward the gunfire. I reached Tiananmen Square shortly before the army & I watched as soldiers fired their automatic weapons directly at the crowd that I was in.

The overriding imperative of the Chinese leadership is to avoid societal unrest.

Once the Chinese job machine stalls out, popular unrest could emerge on a scale much greater than the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.

That’s a term that describes the intangible goodwill and popular support needed by emperors to rule China for the past 3,000 years.

If The Mandate of Heaven is lost, a ruler can fall quickly.

Friends,

Just over six years ago, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness. Not all that common, but not all that rare, this illness will strike up to 6% of the population at some point in their lifetime. Or roughly 2.2 million Canadians. 1/x
At best, my life expectancy has been shortened by 7 to 11 years. An illness that is also a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, among other medical conditions.

It’s a hereditary illness. I didn’t ask for it. I didn’t choose it. It was not within my power to prevent it. 2/x
There is no cure. Nor, to my knowledge, is there any significant research being done in 🇨🇦 (in the 🌎?) to find a cure for this illness.

And yet, those of us afflicted are told to cling to hope. That tomorrow will somehow miraculously be better. That we’ll be OK. 3/x

1) I'm not sure how to make people remember or care that 15 years ago the United States invaded Iraq, setting off a war that continues to this day, with several hundred thousand Iraqis dead, millions turned into refugees. I covered the invasion for the New York Times Magazine.
2) Though I'm a writer, I shot photos during the invasion as I drove a rented Hyundai SUV from Kuwait into Iraq via Safwan, then up the spine of the country to Nasiriya, Diwaniya, Hilla, Kut and finally Baghdad. Here's the Hyundai on March 19, 2003. It's clean--that will change
3) The photographer I worked with, Laurent vander Stockt, drove his own SUV. After several failed attempts to get into Iraq, one time turned back at gunpoint by U.S. soldiers, we finally got through, via what we guessed was a minefield (I followed Lauren tracks). Here's Laurent.
