I genuinely have no idea what the political effects of impeachment would be. Most likely, I think, they're minimal because public opinion is so hardened and polarized.
But it also seems possible there could be some genuine backlash against the Dems, kind of the inverse of what happened to Trump during the shutdown, when his numbers sank below his normal equilibrium OR!
It could hurt Trump and drive his numbers down overall. I really don't know, and I'm not sure anyone does because impeachment is an extremely rare event.
I also think there's no getting around some political calculation about its effects and efficacy, since it's fundamentally a political undertaking.
I do, however, think the people have either over-learned or drawn the wrong lessons from the last impeachment, and there are a lot of reasons this situation is quite different.
