🚨🚨We already knew that HUD’s proposed rule to evict mixed-status families from subsidized housing had nothing to do with alleviating the housing crisis and everything to do with instilling fear in immigrants.

Now, we have HUD’s own words to prove it.

1/
HUD will formally publish the proposed rule soon. To accompany it, @HUDgov put together its “regulatory impact analysis”.

It’s a case study in what happens when political staff try to go around or above career bureaucrats who know much better. 2/
First, HUD acknowledges in the analysis that subsidies don’t cover ineligible immigrants. Mixed-status families pay much higher rents than others, so replacing mixed-status families means increased federal costs to subsidize units - as much as $227m/yr. 3/
Then, HUD acknowledges that Congress isn’t going to give them money to cover The increased costs of subsidies.

HUD says, the “likeliest scenario” is “reducing the quality & quantity of assisted hsg in response to higher costs.” 4/
In other words, HUD says, nobody on waiting list would replace mixed-status families in subsidized hsg b/c:

“there’d be fewer households served w/vouchers...& reduced $ would have impact on public housing & deterioration of units could lead to vacancy.” 5/
Ok, so thanks @HUDgov for confirming that undocumented immigrants don’t get housing subsidies and that nobody on the waiting list is helped by this cruel proposal, despite what @SecretaryCarson claims.

But wait — there’s more! 6/
.@SecretaryCarson @SenTomCotton @RepDanCrenshaw and others said they want to evict “illegal immigrants” from subsidized housing, so that “legitimate American citizens“ and ”America’s most vulnerable” are taken care of first. 7/
But HUD‘s own analysis shows that 25,000 mixed-status households with about 108,000 people include 55,000 ELIGIBLE children.

In other words, @SecretaryCarson is proposing to evict 55,000 deeply poor kids that are US citizens or legal residents. 8/
THEN - and this is really the kicker - HUD tells us the true motivation behind the proposed rule.

“HUD expects the fear of being separated would lead to a prompt evacuation by most mixed-status families, whether or not that fear is justified.” 9/
And, you might ask, does HUD believe that @SecretaryCarson’s proposal will require families to make “ruthless” choices that may lead to homelessness, with all its associated costs to individuals and society?

Yes, yes it does. 10/
So to recap, @SecretaryCarson would, according to HUD:

❎ protect most vulnerable

❎ help Americans in need of hsg assistance

❎ move people off waiting lists

✅ instill fear in immigrants

✅ evict deeply poor American kids

✅ increase homelessness
