“Bemused” is a dead word for me. Because it has two fundamentally different meanings, and because I can never know which meaning the reader will bring with them, I just can’t use it. Ever.
A word that most people don’t know, I’m happy to force them to google. But a word people know unpredictably has to be hung up.
We can be sad about it if we like. We can rail against it. But it is what it is. It’s where we are.
Fairness doesn’t enter into it. And as fairness doesn’t enter into a lot of things, that’s a good lesson to absorb and sit with.
Aaaaand I'm gonna have this stuck in my head for the rest of the night.
