A critique of my piece on tribalism and identity from @JeffreyASachs. Some thoughts 1/x
Agreed: nation-states aren't (weren't?) inevitable. Nation-states, like other human institutions, aren't "natural" (the tribal instinct, however, is). The sorting into nation-states is a fluid, constructed process, which is part of what makes it a violent process 2/x
Nation-states (and this is why the question of borders is so contested) are an attempt to provide an answer to the question of who is the "we" and who is "they." Even people who don't like answering this question still find themselves answering it because politics requires it 3/x
