A note as a private citizen, not a journalist (if you'd allow me that separation):
To all the BJP supporters cheering, celebrating, and gloating about the results - consider doing something for the rest of us. Tell us we are wrong. Not with angry, hateful, boastful words.
To all the BJP supporters cheering, celebrating, and gloating about the results - consider doing something for the rest of us. Tell us we are wrong. Not with angry, hateful, boastful words.
But with words that assure us that, this resounding victory does not make you think you are no longer accountable to those who did not vote for you. That our questions do not make us unworthy of being treated as equal citizens of this country, with valid concerns and voices.
That you do not condone the violent language Mr Shah just used on stage against us. That you do not condone that this win is being greeted with Hindu chants outside the BJP office. That "secularism," like the PM scoffed, is not a dirty word to you. That hate speech is not okay.
Tell ME, that I will be criticized civilly for the faults in my reporting, not simply for raising concerns. That my organizations will not be abused simply for asking questions about this government. That I will not be personally abused for doing my job.
Tell us we are wrong. Prove it to us for the next 5 years. Tell us we have nothing to worry about. That our opinions matter, even when you think they are flawed. That this doesn't mean we are simply to be drowned out, to be rendered invalid, unimportant - and therefore, correct.
Tell us we can continue to call this country home. #IndiaElections2019
