I respect Michelle Singletary, but this is a terrible, boot strapper column. I am happy that she and her husband could save to pay for their kids’ entire college but she has to know that is impossible for most Americans, and not just because they aren’t “responsible.” Like, what?
But also, why would *anyone* be upset that someone else got an amazing gift? You’re not owed anything. This didn’t take anything from you. Lord, we are some selfish folks if we’d rather see others struggle than get something we don’t have. This is just pitiful.
And if you think none of these messages about financial responsibility aren’t racialized — that they aren’t tinged with belief that black people don’t work as hard and are getting something they didn’t deserve — you’re being very naive.
My parents could have saved every extra dollar and they could not have sent even one of us three girls to college debt free. I guess they shouldn’t have lazily been working class.
