Someone on here the other day actually *scoffed* at why enslaved people did not simply overtake the vastly outnumbered slavers during the Middle Passage. As if everything abt these ships weren't designed against that. Watch if you have time: slavevoyages.org/voyage/ship
Our educational system has done us all an intentional disservice. Also, most of these slave ships were operated by Northern traders. For everyone who says their white ancestors "didn't own slaves" or "fought for the Union," your legacy is the barbarism of the Middle Passage.

This is the real SAT "adversity score." People are so worried abt the most disadvantaged children gaining what they consider an unearned advantage while the system continues to work in favor of those with the most. Folks can't tell me a damn thing about a so-called meritocracy.
We're told programs designed to deal with disadvantage are unfair because they let undeserving children of color in over hardworking white students. And again and again we see that white children do well not only because they are born into advantage, but also bc sys is rigged.
What's worse, these kids using accommodations for learning disabilities bear none of the stigma that poor black and brown children face. As I say again and again, our schools are not broken. They are operating as designed.

So, @NYDailyNews takes the brave step of supporting expanding schools that screen out most kids and maintaining admisssion to PUBLIC schools by a single-day high-stakes test, while expanding the two-tiered educational system of talented and gifted programs/schools.
I wish we’d really examine how little we think of our children who come from disadvantage, who may struggle more academically, that we’re constantly manuevering to separate other “worthy” children from them.
By brave I mean not at all. This solve absolutely forces this city to confront NONE of the drivers of segregation, or the morality of providing top tier, exclusive public education to a small number of students. Expanding systems of inequality is not the solve for inequality.

65 years ago today, the nation’s highest court issued a radical decision when it unanimously struck down legal apartheid in American schools, overturning its own precedent and the century’s long American way of life that deemed black people as untouchable, a caste apart.
It is considered one of the most important rulings in the history of the Court. However, today, millions of black children remain in segregated, high-poverty schools. Yet not even the most liberal Democratic candidate has put forth a policy to integrate our schools.
This is despite the fact that integrated schools are one of the most important drivers of upward mobility for black children — and therefore, for AMerica as a whole, raising achievement, driving down poverty and crime and breaking caste. washingtonpost.com/education/2019…

I attended a Fundamentalist Baptist school from k5-8th grade, a Mennonite high school from 9th-12th grade, and a liberal arts Christian college for two years before transferring to a non-religious university. As you might imagine, it was traumatizing. #ExposeChristianSchools
The textbooks at my Fundamentalist Baptist school were published by Bob Jones University. I was one of the few Black students there & the only Black student in my class. My "Christian" teachers treated me differently. My "Christian" classmates bullied me. #ExposeChristianSchools
I was forced to sit in the back of the room next to my teacher's desk, away from my classmates. I was placed in a reading group below my level (until my parents found out). I was reprimanded and punished for asking questions or defending my work. #ExposeChristianSchools

It's not well known that the congregation of the First African Baptist Church in Richmond donated approximately $40 towards Irish Famine Relief in 1847. Around 2,000 members of the congregation were slaves, and only 150 were free.
Instead of thanking this impoverished and enslaved community for their generosity, the Irish American Boston Pilot newspaper used this story to mock British philanthropy and essentially argue that it was proof that the Irish had it “worse” than slaves.
Thirteen years later the same newspaper argued that the abolition of slavery would be a terrible mistake as "by overstocking the market of labor [it would] do incalculable injury to white hands.”

You guys wanna know what it means when we say 'White people have no culture?'.

White isn't an ethnicity. On the contrary, the concept of /being/ white erases whatever ethnic background your kin may have held to appeal to the social strata.
Remember, the concept of whiteness was conceptualized during the Age of Enlightenment so rich people didn't have to feel bad about enslaving their fellow man while also braying about all men's inalienable rights. ;>
Remember that time when Irish people weren't considered White so they had to compete with black americans for their place in American society? 😉

I have been trying to stay out of the discussion of slavery on the timeline because I know most people don't know the actual history & I get mean when I have my history pants on. Historians have worked too hard to make history accessible for so many to ignore facts

Manumission laws aka the ways that enslaved people could legally be freed? Yeah, all the way back to 1723. Note how many times freedom includes the severing of family ties. Black slave owners often bought family members but couldn't legally free them

After the #fall of the #Roman #Empire in these businesses food was served in shared tables and consisted of a fixed menu, according to what was already prepared. Even the nobility, like celebrities today, would frequent when traveling.
But, when did the concept and business of restaurants truly begin?
It began with Paracelsus (1493-1541), a brilliant Swiss physician who modernized medicine with rational clinical judgment and changed the way we eat in the #Western #world.
