Five @ScotlandXr activists have padlocked themselves to the Scottish Parliament building
Apparently a key has been sent to each of the Holyrood parties and Roseanna Cunningham in a bid to get them to come unlock the activists, and discuss the Climate Bill in the process
Extinction Rebellion activists say the Climate Bill is “nowhere near ambitious enough”, and that current emissions targets are “tantamount to accepting ecocide” Bike lock around the neck
The plot thickens: the Greens haven’t received their keys yet, despite the fact they were handed in to parly yesterday. They may well be sitting in the Parliament mailroom.
This all getting a bit Crystal Maze
The Greens have found their key and unlocked one of the @ScotlandXr activists! A triumph for Holyrood’s internal mail system at the very least
There are still four climate protestors bike-chained to Holyrood. Apparently neither the Tories or the Lib Dems have received their keys yet, so they might be there a while...
I’ve just seen Willie Rennie sitting having a coffee in the garden lobby, which doesn’t really scream urgency. Presumably someone is furiously sorting through the mailbox in the office. Kit-kats being doled out to protestors outside
Oh here is Willie Rennie! The Lib Dems really don’t have a key so he’s just come out for a chat. The protestor seems to be taking the fact he may never be released on the chin fairly well
Willie Rennie has skilfully managed to steer the conversation on to Air Passenger Duty and the climate emergency, rather than the fact he’s unable to actually release this man Willie Rennie with protestor
Another key has been found! Free Willie, etc Willie Rennie freeing protestor
Maurice Golden has turned up for the Tories, and in a bold attempt at leafleting he’s actually brought some party literature as well as the key. “We’re taking an evidence-based approach,” he says
Just the two protestors left now, eating crisps and waiting for Labour and the SNP. God and internal mail willing, the adult nappies will not be needed today
Richard Leonard has arrived and opted to talk policy before releasing this protestor; he says he agrees “100%” that there needs to be action, and is met with some quite detailed questions about what amendments Labour are going to table for the Climate Bill
In fairness there’s a lot of pressure on here. I too would be struggling mightily to open a bike lock
And then there was one...the final @ScotlandXr protestor waiting on @strathearnrose The last protestor standing/sitting
And that’s them all! Roseanna Cunningham has come out to release the final @ScotlandXr activist (and defend government climate policy)
Roseanna Cunningham contending that ScotGov has the “most ambitious” emissions targets in the world - climate protestors telling the environment secretary that it’s “too little too late” Roseanna Cunningham with protestor
I can now report that nobody is currently chained to the Scottish Parliament building
The climate change protest has ended after all five parties sent MSPs out to speak to / release the activists chained to the building.

Roughly twenty metres away, the Sudanese democracy protest continues, largely ignored
