1/ 20 years ago, the Cult of the Dead Cow (cDc) announce the release of BackOrifice 2000 (BO2K). It was a game changer. I watched the "BO2K Presentation Behind-the-Scenes" video and now I'm both happy and sad

2/ I'm sad because a lot of things are still valid today:

"One: I'm not gonna tell you that web page hacks for a political point are wrong. But pick the cause before you pick the site you're gonna hack. Like, make it a little bit more relevant"

3/ Your hacking skills should be a way to serve your cause. Showing to the planet that you are the best hacker of the world is not a cause. Use your skills to make a difference.

4/ "If you can think of a way to use your hacking skills to make a difference that's the f*cking future. That is going to change the world"

I'm sad because 20 years after, most of the people don't care about "make a difference".

5/ In my opinion, this is what a hacker is and should do. He is different, he think differently and he is here to make people think differently. His job is to annoy people, push them out of their confort zone.

6/ "You guys have skills. Figure out how you can use these skills to make sh*t happen because you can make sh*t happen. You can do it"

7/ The discussion about application level security, which was already not a new concept at this time, is extremely powerful

"Say I want to run this program and I want to watch what it's doing and be able to control what's its doing"

8/ Ffs, it was 20 years ago and we are still at the same point. The concepts are the very same. The problems too.

"But it'd be nice if people who do know what a file is have the option to be able to watch [what the OS is doing]"

9/ I'm also incredibly happy because the energy in this video is very cool. This spirit. This is the true hacking spirit. We need this today. I don't know how but we need to create a new generation with this exact same spirit "to make sh*t happen"
