This seems like a good time to talk abt navigating life as a queer (couple): my wife & I don’t to take it personally if one of us stops a PDA suddenly; we have a code word for if we want to kiss, but don’t feel safe; we’ve lied & said ‘we’re friends’. #QueerInPublic
I dread conversations w/ taxi drivers b/c I can talk abt very little of my life w/out outing myself. Camp sites w/ their single-sex bans (thanks, stags/hens!) make booking/checking-in tricky. I’ve worried abt being a #QueerInPublic parent—and I’m not even pregnant yet.
When thinking abt travelling (UK or abroad) we ask these Qs before booking: Are we and/or our relationship legal? Do we disclose that we’re a couple? Do we know anyone gay who lives/has been there? And we don’t have to worry abt bathrooms... #QueerInPublic
This is not advice; these are coping mechanisms. We’ve had coffee thrown at us (& reported it to @galopuk). We’ve had cat calls & looks, changed carriages & routes. We’ve moved to the upper deck, taken the front row seat b/c we thought it was safe. #QueerInPublic
Talking to my parents last night abt the recent attacks on queer couples, my dad said that he sometimes worries abt me working at @gaystheword. He is a worrier, but I was also honest: I do, too, and we prepare as best we can. #QueerInPublic
This is just everyday the shit we, individually, as couples and as a community, think abt on a daily basis—and I’m a cis white American femme-presenting woman, which affords a lot of freedoms & get-out cards. But it doesn’t make me any less angry. #QueerInPublic
I am all here for it if someone wants to organise a big ol’ ‘Queer Kiss In’ in Trafalgar Square or s’thing, but I also want to hear other ppl’s stories because the recent victims, and my wife and I, are not alone. #QueerInPublic
Being #QueerInPublic is not a crime. It’s not disgusting, morally repugnant, or for your entertainment. I’m just going to work, meeting friends, out on a date, kissing my wife. It’s got nothing to do w/ anyone else.
