You’ve got to hand it to Stewart: he’s doing it differently. In a generally tedious contest, he’s made it a little bit better.
“In the contest for who is the greatest clown in this race, I fear there may be some competition.”
.@RoryStewartUK has at least made a difference to this race- done it his way, has influenced the debate, said pretty fearlesslesy what he thinks about the frontrunner and much of the (incorrect) prevailing wisdom in the Conservative party. Can’t say that of all, or most.
Also true to say that although much has been made about Stewart’s lack of conservatism, the truth is, in terms of his attachment to our political institutions, especially parliamentary democracy, his has emerged as the most authentic traditional conservative voice in this race.
That said, Rory Stewart’s plan is basically just May’s plan, to get her deal through Parliament, an idea which, you might have noticed, she tested to destruction. Thus it is as deluded as many of the ideas of his colleagues.
Of course one way May might have succeeded if she’d made compromises which would have broken her party. She wasn’t willing to do that. He might.
