Since Donald Trump made Twitter his preferred medium for communicating with the country, a lot of us have become unhealthily obsessed with it.

For many people I know, it’s become an outright addiction.

But my concern is not for the mental health of Twitter addicts; it’s for the nation they collectively rule.

A lot of people now instinctively take Twitter to be representative of America—and let it guide their decisions, big and small.

Until now, nobody has answered these questions on the basis of a comprehensive global dataset.

@jkyleindc and I set out to change that.

We assembled a first-of-its-kind dataset of populist leaders, looking at 46 heads of government across 33 countries who were in power between 1990 and today.

And instead of speculating about what populists did to democracy, we actually looked at the historical record.
So what impact did populist governments have on democracy in the past?

Not good. At all:
* Populist leaders stay in office twice as long
* They are four times as likely to cause democratic backsliding
* Only 34% leave office after free and fair elections or due to term limits

In the common imagination, the deep cultural divide in the United States pits Team Woke (young, female, POC) against Team Resentful (old, male, white).

This is almost entirely wrong.

As a great new study by More in Common shows, Americans actually divide into seven tribes:

* Progressive activists
* Traditional liberals
* Passive liberals
* Politically disengaged
* Moderates
* Traditional conservatives
* Devoted conservatives

Traditional and devoted conservatives are far outside the American mainstream. The views of progressive activists are even further away from the views of average Americans.

The rest has a lot in common. They form an “exhausted majority.”
