We need to wake up to the incredibly serious implications of the President of the United States actively promoting the far right racist and Islamophobe Katie Hopkins.

For those (particularly US people) who are meeting her for the first time, some things you need to know (thread)

She started out as a harmless attention-seeking reality TV star. But in 2015 she saw an opening around the emerging alt right ‘White people in Europe are being replaced’ movement.

She uses language which is common to students of genocide. Eg cockroaches in Rwanda

She is happy being called a racist. She admits she is one.

As I said, Hopkins is no stranger to using language which is clearly and unambiguously reminiscent of past genocide. She wanted a ‘final solution’ for the Muslim population in Europe just like Hitler wanted, and achieved, one for the Jews in Europe

Hopkins suggested internment camps for Muslims suspected of extremism. Again, a horrifying shadow of past genocides, particularly chilling in Europe

In recent years Hopkins has become - very deliberately - a mouthpiece for the far right, not just weird ‘comedians’ on YouTube but full on Nazi-inheritors like Defend Europe

This is not someone who is looking for plausible deniability. Hopkins is a mouthpiece for the Jew and Muslim hating far right.

This is one of the things that, as a British Jew, makes me feel sick to the stomach when I hear her ‘standing up’ for Jews. She isn’t. She’s using us.

She pals around with a Holocaust denier because that’s Hopkins circles she moves in

Hopkins is now promoting her new film ‘Homelands’ which by all accounts is a white nationalist propaganda. This will now have many new viewers thanks to the President of the United States

Let’s not forget that Hopkins and Trump have found common ground bullying our brilliant London mayor @SadiqKhan - clearly because he’s a Muslim.

No other reason. They couldn’t care less about knife crime except as a reason to bash Khan.

These are dangerous times for Muslims. Islamophobia is on the rise and now has political backing from the US President who is mainstreaming racist cranks like Hopkins.

Our own likely future prime minister Boris Johnson is a bigot himself. It’s an axis of intolerance

Islamist extremism is a frightening here and across the world but the vast majority of Muslims are peace loving ordinary citizens who want to get on with their lives without fear of violence and discrimination.

We must stand for them and against racists like Trump and Hopkins

It’s a disgrace to the UK that we feted @reaIDoraIdTrunp with a state visit and he bookended it with racist attacks against London’s excellent Muslim mayor. We have been totally played.

Remember, genocide doesn’t start with gas chambers, it starts with dehumanisation. That’s what happening to Muslims here and people who cherish human rights need to stand up to it (video via @rights_info)

His choice to quote Katie Hopkins, whose entire career is now focussed on anti-Muslim agitation, shows that this was *all about* @SadiqKhan being Muslim.
