I'm sorry -- I have to delete my account because @AuschwitzMuseum asked for a follow back?
And @KFILE has to delete his because the account ... backed him up and *then* asked for a follow back?
Wait, now I'm *really* confused -- the museum account thanked @rrgarver for his tweet and then added the exact same follow-back invitation that's supposed to be devastating to the rest of us.

Seems like I might get to keep my account after all. Phew.

Another way to understand Eastland and Talmadge's place in national politics in the civil rights era:

After Strom Thurmond switched to the GOP in 1964, conservatives like William F. Buckley Jr. hoped that Eastland, Talmadge and other Dixiecrats might be persuaded to switch too.
Buckley understood that the key to all this was making sure that Strom Thurmond got to keep his seniority, because seniority determined the powers and perks of senators -- even more considerable at that time.

And indeed, the GOP did that for Thurmond.
Buckley hoped the same offer might be extended to other older Dixiecrats.

"Who might be approached?" he asks at the end. "James Eastland, for instance." Then he names seven more targets, including Talmadge.

Buckley clearly thought they had a home in the GOP as it turned right.

Let me put this another way:

For 1973, Joe Biden's first year in Congress, the American Conservative Union judged that Sen. Jim Eastland (D-MS) and Sen. Herman Talmadge (D-GA) were more conservative than 23 of the 44 Republicans in the Senate.
Here, you can see several of the Republicans who were rated as *less* aligned with the stances of the American Conservative Union than Eastland and Talmadge that year.

And if you go further down, you’ll find the remnants of the more liberal Republicans, like Ed Brooke and Jacob Javits.

Heck, Clifford Case is rated as less reliably conservative than Ted Kennedy.

A history lesson *is* warranted. Senators James Eastland and Herman Talmadge were southern *conservatives*—as were other segregationists, in both parties.
As I've noted repeatedly, Southern Democrats were *absolutely* the champions of segregation for most of the 20th century.

But on segregation and civil rights, the first Southern Republicans of the modern era were virtually identical.

To be clear, the point in all that isn't that Southern Republicans were "worse" than Southern Democrats on matters of civil rights, but rather that they were pretty much the same.

I feel like driving up some controversy, so how about a thread of Hot Takes/Unpopular Opinions! You know the drill, one like = one take/opinion.

Start easy: the blunt awkwardness/cringe of 'Blurryface' is the point of taking the piss out of Tyler. I stand by my light 9/10.
2. I don't hate Nickelback's 'Dark Horse' - it's easily a record for them at their most tasteless, but the frat-bro swagger of it helps some of their better hooks.
3. 'Fireflies' by Owl City is a genuinely terrific song that captures precocious, starry-eyed wonderment better than few others in the 2000s.

It is SPECTACULARLY lame, but that's why it works.

Like sure, sometimes people refuse to accept apologies. And sometimes apologies aren't enough if there's a pattern of behavior showing a lack of incremental improvement.
But mostly, when folks say, "oops, sorry," it ends things. Especially these days, when folks have shifted from the patterns of #hasjustinelandedyet. There's an attempt to give people space to "oops" their way back.
