After yesterday's fascinating keynote lecture by Gloria Ladson-Billings, we are getting ready for the @CERESED conference: Getting it right for every child: is our education racially literate? Stay tuned as we'll be tweeting throughout the day!
Carol Young on Problematising Whiteness: discussing whiteness is is uncomfortable, but we can't prioritise white people's feelings and comfort. At the same time, we need to get white people on board to promote anti-racist education.

Diversity and 'diffence' in education can be more othering than inclusive. Are we exoticising otherness? Ethnicity and religion are conflated with race. And positive stereotypes are still stereotypes - we need to question this.
At the end of the day, if one group is disadvantaged there is another group benefitting. We need to question white privilege and foster critical thinking, self-reflection and multiple perspectives in the classroom.
By understanding the culture of an in-group, we can better understand the out-group's experience. We can get white people to see the structures of racism and see where they sit within that.
White privilege is freedom from being seen as different over generations.
Eg of discussing white privilege: talking about disrespect in the classroom.
Everyday racism in the classroom becomes clear through these discussions. Young people of colour are more likely to be negatively singled out in society.
Carol Young concludes with what we want young people to feel 👇🏽

Clare Barker, headteacher of St Alberts School reflects on her experience of teaching:
'I didn't realise I was white until I worked in my school (95% BME pupils). I wasn't culturally responsive because I was brought up in white spaces and I never had to think about race before'
'Our pupils of colour always get stares and comments on school trips. As a white person, I don't get those stares on ye bus because of my privilege. I've heard people shouting 'Go back to your country' to our pupils. We can't have that in our schools without addressing whiteness.'
'We can't continue to be compliant about racism, no matter how small the negative assumptions might be about a Muslim girl not getting to choose her clothes.'
'We can't stop asking questions and engaging in courageous conversation. It might not change in our lifetime but that doesn't mean we shouldn't stop trying.' Clare Harker #ceresconversation19
