Turns out the Congress for Cultural Freedom, used to push anti-communism in leftist circles and in culture/art, has interesting roots. Michael Josselson, the consistent leader of the operation, got his start in post-war Germany helping Nazis avoid justice
He worked with Nabokov, a White Russian émigré composer, ostensibly on denazification. However, the program appears primarily aimed at promoting anti-communist culture, in the same line as his later project
The Information Control Division was a psyops division, and Nabokov & Josselson happily helped Wilhelm Furtwängler, conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic under the Third Reich, avoid undergoing the denazification procedure once he threatened to go to Moscow.
They went so far that one US official wondered "how it happens that so many prominent nazis in the field of musicology are still active." btw, for anyone wondering about this source, this is from Frances Saunders, an anti-communist: 'The Cultural Cold War'
