This is an important thing to address. You are not paying reparations personally. You are paying taxes. And our govt uses those taxes to take care of it's financial obligations. That is the contract, and nothing changes just because you don't like the debts America has incurred.
People keep trying to take Black Reparations and turn it into something personal. It's not about you. It doesn't matter how you *feel* about it personally. Black people were wronged. We are owed. That's it.
One thing that's really clear whenever I talk about reparations. The people who opposed it have no real perspective on the sheer magnitude of the transgression. White people and other non-black people. They have not accepted the scope of the thing.
The level of mental gymnastics that have been in my mentions today have been objectively impressive. Figuring out how to not rectify things with black people turns a lot of folks into amateur historians, philosophers, lawyers and economists all at once.
Also, the entirety of some folks arguments hinges on slavery being a long time ago. A lot of people skip over Jim Crow because they don't actually know what it was. There is a big empty space in people's minds between the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Act.
They don't reckon with it. They go through more contortions to pretend that's not what we're talking about. People start from the premise of "how can we avoid paying", and the rest is an exercise in creativity.
