1/Today's @bopinion post is about why of all the candidates in the race, Elizabeth Warren feels like the one who could be the next FDR.

2/Warren has released a huge number of startlingly detailed policy plans.

If elected, she'll be ready to go from day 1.

3/These plans stand out from those of many of Warren's Democratic peers not just in their number and level of detail, but in their approach.

This is not a laundry list. It's a coherent vision for transforming the U.S. economy.
4/Example 1: Co-determination.

This would transform the U.S. corporate system to make workers official stakeholders in the companies they work for.

5/Co-determination IS about transferring economic power from shareholders and managers to workers.

And it IS the only really novel idea for doing so.

But it's not JUST about power. If done right, it is also about productivity.
6/Next is Warren's plan for "breaking up" Big Tech.

If you read the proposal, you'll see it's mostly *not* about breaking up companies. It's about regulating platforms, in ways that allow smaller businesses to continue to thrive.
7/Another encouraging sign is Warren's housing plan, which would use a combination of upzoning, construction incentives, and assistance for low-income renters and homebuyers.

8/And then there's industrial policy.

This is going to alienate a lot of orthodox economic thinkers, but I really like what Warren is doing here. And of all the candidates, she is the only one who has articulated a vision like this.

9/Warren's plans ARE strongly progressive. They contain a lot of redistribution, not just of money but of power.

But they are also very focused on economic GROWTH and productivity.

A few years ago I called for a "New Industrialism". This is it.

10/Warren's progressive industrialism looks a lot like that of...Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

11/In their book "Concrete Economics", @delong and Stephen S. Cohen called for concrete ideas that would present a tangible vision to Americans and show them exactly what their economy would give them.

I believe Warren is doing exactly that.

12/This is not to say I like every specific element of Warren's plans.

There are definitely some problems that will need to be ironed out.
13/But no set of plans is perfect. No policy program is without errors and missteps. The New Deal certainly had its share!

Instead of picking apart the minutiae, I focus on the broad strokes, and here, Warren just keeps winning my admiration and approval.
14/If you want a president that transforms the U.S. economy in a way similar to the way FDR did, then Warren seems like your best bet.
