Franco and Real Madrid, chronology of a lie.
From 1931 to 1936 (Second Spanish Republic) Real Madrid wins two out five league titles, one of them undefeated. Barça doesn’t win any during that time.
Madrid wins as well two Copas de la República, beating Barça in the final in one of them. The blaugranas, the team that won the most Copas del Generalísimo during the dictatorship, doesn’t win any during the second republic.
During this time and until the civil war, Rafael Sánchez-Guerra is Real Madrid’s president and a republican councilman for the Madrid City Hall. He is sent to prison at the end of the war and is able to escape thanks to the French secret services, hidden in the trunk of a car.
1936-1939 Antonio Ortega, colonel of the republican army, general director of security, is appointed president of Real Madrid during the Spanish Civil. He is executed by Franco in 1939.
English journalist Phil Ball tells us that “there is people in Catalonia that have bother to investigate the covert operation related with Sunyol, but that no one cares about Ortega”.
The Chamartín stadium and club facilities are named the “Sports Batallion” and used by “the reds” (the republicans) as barracks and training grounds during the war.
Once the war ended, Real Madrid’s headquarters had been destroyed in a bombing. The trophies had been stolen and the stands taken apart to obtain wood. The club’s money had been donated to the republic to aid in the war.
There are only 5 players left from the squad before the war. The rest are either exiled, in Franco’s prisons, or have been executed.
Professor, jurist and socialist politician Gregorio Peces Barba, said that "Madrid was about to be dissolved by Franco"
Bernabéu: "When the war was over, they put in jail half our team and the directive of Atlético was all formed by colonels," this were his words of that time, when along with other former players and partners he had to rebuild a Real Madrid on the verge of disappearance.
An old leftist as qualified as Eduardo Haro Tecglen recalled that due to this, "among the 'red' survivors there was more sympathy towards Real Madrid than towards Atlético Aviación (now Atlético de Madrid)".
Much of the military establishment had been decisive in the formation of Atlético Aviación, later Atlético de Madrid. It was directed and formed by commanders of the Franco’s Air Force that had besieged the republican capital.
The orphans of fallen members of the national side’s aviation (Franco’s side) had the right to enter the Atlético stadium free of charge. Also, when the civil war begins, Atlético was in the 2nd division and after the resumption of the league they were back in the 1st division.
1940-41 Atlético Aviación wins the two first leagues during the dictatorship.
1942 – Barça wins their first Copa del Generalísimo. Madrid would win it four years later.
1944 - Construction begins on the new stadium which cost sixty-eight million pesetas. Bernabéu resorted to issuing mortgage obligations that allowed the club to undertake the work. They were covered mostly by Real Madrid's own club members.
1945 - End of the Second World War. Franco's Spain is isolated from democratic and anti-fascist Europe.
1946 - President of Madrid throws General Millán Astray, a member of the Falange (fascist political party) out of the VIP box who then challenged him to a duel of pistols. Bernabéu never apologized to the regime for this episode, Astray never returned to the stadium.
It was not the only clash of Bernabéu with Falangists. His verbal fight with the Franco’s minister Rafael Cavestany is also known.
1947 - Inauguration of the new RM stadium. Let’s recall that it was paid by issuing debt obligations for its partners up to 20 years responding with their assets.
1950 – Real Madrid is interested in signing Kubala, one of the best players in Europe. Thw RFEF (Spanish Football Federation) prevents them from doing so. With the help of the regime, he would end up playing for Barça.
1954 - Bernabéu reaches an agreement with Millonarios to sign Di Stéfano, under contract till the end of 1954 with the Colombian club. Barça also obtains part of the rights through River Plate. FIFA gets involved and says he has to alternate between the two clubs, Barça refuses.
1954 – 15 years after the arrival of Franco, Real Madrid wins their first league title since the Second Republic. During that time Barça has won 5 titles and Atlético has won 4 to Real Madrid’s only title.
1956 - Real Madrid conquers the first European Cup, the final is played in Paris. France is then a country that represents freedom and democracy in an anti-fascist Europe.
1960 - Real Madrid wins its fifth consecutive European Cup in democratic Europe. During that same period (56-60) the Whites won only two Leagues and no Cups. Barça won two leagues and two cups in the anti-democratic and fascist Spain.
1963 - Bernabéu, against the wishes of the regime, pays tribute to Rafael Sanchez-Guerra, the former Madrid and Republican president who went into exile in Paris, taking advantage of a visit from Madrid.
1973 - A year before Barça handed out its third gold medal to Franco, the president of RM gave the club's gold badge to Israeli Moshé Dayán, a well-known supporter of RM, this against Franco's will. The dictator at that time did not recognize the state of Israel.
1975 - Franco dies. Out of the next following 15 championships, and the return of democracy in Spain, RM wins ten leagues, Barça and Atlético only one.
1978 - In one of the lasts interviews with Santiago Bernabéu, he declared: "The team of the regime ? What Franco’s governments have done is exploit us and they have never given us even five cents" Barça obtained three requalification of land during the dictatorship. #TheEND
