But to me this is not as much a Christian problem as it is a problem in Tamil society
The society needs to introspect on why it has these sub-cultures
On why it tends towards extremes
I have seen scenes not all that different even in temples, though it is somewhat more restrained because the "brahminical" establishment snubs such tendencies and doesn't fan them unlike the church
Hindu society what with all its snobbery and its distaste for the lowest denomination, keeps them in check
But they are v much there...
That's all
I see it as a problem that many communities in India (Hindu or otherwise) have to confront...Particularly in Southern India
There is a reason why caste divides and self-segregation is as strong as it is, in the South
Hindu "popularizers" with an eye on the mass market have often deified the worst manifestations of these subcultures under the garb of "bhakti" movement
But they don't deserve that...
It is a society of extremes. And this isn't healthy
Why was access within temples regulated in centuries past? Why religion was not as perfectly democratic as it could have been...
What did the elites fear?
