This BJP government under Narendra Modi for a v long time now has been obsessed with "Start-ups"

Boosting growth is so much more than encouraging start-ups

Growth largely comes from scale-enablement. And making the already well established businesses even larger
We don't have a dearth of start-ups and self employment in India

But this is not a sign of strength. People start their own businesses often because you don't have jobs available among corporates

90% of Indians are self-employed. And this is a problem
@ATabarrok wrote about this a couple of years back -

The rhetoric on start-ups and small businesses is all well and good.

It may sound v pro-business. But it merely conceals an inability of the economy to generate scale and employ people en-masse
This is also a cultural problem in part

Indians, for better or worse, don't like working for a boss

And there is a tendency to glorify the idea of being "self-employed"

Even if it means earning much less than what you would working for a large MNC/
Back in the 70s, there was this book by an economist named EF Schumacher titled "Small is Beautiful"

V popular in India!

Nobody talks about this book in the West today

Yet Indians keep talking about "Small is Beautiful". Every aged Indian interested in Econ talks up this book!
Whoever you talk to in India loves to talk up how India is different

Indian psyche
Indian exceptionalism
Indian penchant for the "small"
Cultural autonomy

Be it Lohia-ite socialists, be it Kangressis, be it Jana Sanghis, or even old time Swatantra-ites
There is talk of the same kUpa manDuka policies under different labels -

Indigenous socialism (Lohia)
Indigenous capitalism

etc etc

Sorry...it is not helping us.
I am a conservative myself.

Sure..I understand there IS an Indian exceptionalism

But honoring that exceptionalism cannot be at the expense of keeping India 1/3rd as rich as China or 1/5th as rich as South Korea

It is not a great trade-off
