Boosting growth is so much more than encouraging start-ups
Growth largely comes from scale-enablement. And making the already well established businesses even larger
But this is not a sign of strength. People start their own businesses often because you don't have jobs available among corporates
90% of Indians are self-employed. And this is a problem
It may sound v pro-business. But it merely conceals an inability of the economy to generate scale and employ people en-masse
Indians, for better or worse, don't like working for a boss
And there is a tendency to glorify the idea of being "self-employed"
Even if it means earning much less than what you would working for a large MNC/
V popular in India!
Nobody talks about this book in the West today
Yet Indians keep talking about "Small is Beautiful". Every aged Indian interested in Econ talks up this book!
Indian psyche
Indian exceptionalism
Indian penchant for the "small"
Cultural autonomy
Be it Lohia-ite socialists, be it Kangressis, be it Jana Sanghis, or even old time Swatantra-ites
Indigenous socialism (Lohia)
Indigenous capitalism
etc etc
Sorry...it is not helping us.
Sure..I understand there IS an Indian exceptionalism
But honoring that exceptionalism cannot be at the expense of keeping India 1/3rd as rich as China or 1/5th as rich as South Korea
It is not a great trade-off
