We might end up calling this "the punch heard round the world." 4 days ago, I predicted that this punch was going to make this "journalist" a star. And here he is, the focus of an op-ed by Great Leader's son the day before the Great Patriotic Military parade. 
It's ironic that Trump, Jr. calls out journalists for "lying" about Antifa, because he himself has repeated the lie about "cement milkshakes" I discussed in this thread. Somehow I knew this gem of a detail would become a Trumpian "alternative fact."
Here's a screen shot of the paragraph in case the "editors" at the Daily Caller decide they care more about facts than ideology. Doubtful, but you never know.
The son of the president who excoriates the press, who has admirers who have sent pipe bombs to journalists, and who recently chuckled with Putin about "getting rid" of journalists, and loves Khashoggi's murderers, can't believe leftists are so mean to journalists.
As this Columbia Journalism Review article shows, the person who was assaulted (and the outlet he works for) laundered shoddy, politically-motivated research that resulted in about a dozen journalists receiving credible death threats from neo-Nazi groups. cjr.org/analysis/quill…
But, you know, the daily caller has also published a rebuttal to that CJR article so we should believe it over the most prestigious journalism review in America. You'll never believe what the DC found when they did some digging...yes...GEORGE SOROS! Good journalism guys.
Junior Varsity Trump also is appalled that the media would promote a "false narrative" that served their political agenda. You mean, um, like "cement milkshakes?"
If we're gonna talk about details that dropped out of the media narrative about Portland, one might be that the pro-Trump group of 50 or so people who staged the rally wore T-shirts like this to their August rally last year. RWDS stands for "right wing death squads."
That same super-MAGA group also filmed themselves this weekend trying to bait counter-protestors into "throwing sh*t at the cops." Very pro-police those folks.
None of this context I've provided makes punching someone, even a right wing provocateur, a legal or politically-wise thing to do, IMHO.
If anything, this act has accelerated and given cover to something the President has long voiced a desire to do...to "lock up" his political opponents in the name of "protecting the republic from dangerous, unhinged leftists."

@zackbeauchamp As that article points out, Ngo is a right wing propagandist with little interest in pursuing objective truth. That said, he's still someone operating in the media industry and also a human being who has the right not to be physically assaulted.
