If your tool aggregates at write time and strips context, it is not a debugging tool because you can not answer specific questions.

At best, it may get you close enough that a few lucky guesses or intuitive leaps can land you on the right answer (or some part of it)
This role of sitting between devs and their code, interpreting low level systems graphs and translating them into the language of services and endpoints and what your code is /actually/ doing, has long been filled by your harried ops professional. Ops fingers in the o11y dikes.
Ops builds up enough scar tissue over time that we can make those intuitive leaps to almost *anything*, because we've seen everything.

Not gonna lie, it feels great to be a wizard. 🔮🧹🌚

I am late sharing this link, but I needed time to do it justice. 🌷

The piece is called "How Dark Deploys In 50ms", by my dear, brilliant friend @paulbiggar, the cofounder/CTO of @darklang who previously (this is important) cofounded @CircleCI.
You might already be side-eyeing the title, wondering why I am telling you to read such obvious product marketing clickbait for a product youve never heard of, complete with implausibly grandiose numbers that bring to mind the bad old days of "MongoDB is Web Scale!"
Or as @markcallaghan calls it, "benchmarketing". 🎀🎀🎀

My Happy Uber Story: walking in mission just now, start to feel like some dude is following me. So I turn a corner (they turn too). Walk a ways and double back (they do too). Cross a street and turn again, same.

Peered hard to see if it was a friend pranking me; nope. Huh.
I call out "dude! quit following me" but he has headphones on and turns away. So I order an uber, despite being ~3 blocks from the office. Car arrives, and he GETS IN THE OTHER SIDE.

So I shut the door, changed the app destination to North Beach, and waved them off cheerily
Oh.. thanks for all the well wishes, but I didn't feel in danger. I think they were mentally ill. 😕 I was just annoyed, and thought it wisest not to walk straight up into the office without ditching him first. I had intended the car for *me*, though. ☺️

@alanpage It's very telling that manual testing is seen as cheap.

IME this perception exists because (as I have repeatedly seen at clients) the absolute most junior people are hired as testers in order to keep costs down. Because they’re so junior they don’t contribute very much. 1/2
@alanpage 2/3 They stay junior because they have no mentorship (because mentorship is expensive).

The “5x to 15x” cost of automation proposed by the OP fits with this model: median developer pay is around $150k US. A team of five devs then costs ~$750k annually (considering TC only here)
@alanpage 3/4 Glassdoor lists “QA Analyst” roles as starting at $18k US. I’m in NYC so this is lower than I’ve ever seen. Let’s assume QA roles start around $25k, which is just enough to rent a room and live paycheck to paycheck in NYC.

The cheapest QA analyst costs 17% of a dev salary.

Please understand I’m not sharing my story for people to feel sorry for me I’m telling it bc #mentalabuse is real and it’s not addressed enough. Mental abuse is just like being physically abused only the scars done go away.
For so long I’ve hid the mental abuse I went through for 17 years. To ashamed to tell my story bc I was the little girl who was raised to never let anyone mentally beat me down. I was the little girl who’s Dad would say no one will ever get in Bonnie’s way but it happened.
I won’t go into long details of those 17 years but I will tell you that mental abusers are smart. He was charming and confident at first the slowly never knowing what mood he would be in.

Interaction Resiliency (iXR) is the practice of Software QA (aka #testing) as applied to "devops" or more properly Safety-II software delivery (aka continuous delivery & continuous deployment).
I put a name to "testing in devops" or "agile testing in continuous delivery" because a) those phrases are clumsy 😀 and b) the current discourse in #testing constantly collapses back on itself as big-A Agile + CDT are conflated time-and-time-again with Safety-II + Kaizen #iXR

Hey all #testing folk. I have someone in my team who loves working in #agile teams. But they're a senior tester, and they're not sure where they go next in terms of career ladder, esp as they're near the ceiling of what the role pays.
Part of me wonders if the answer to this is moving away from treating salary as hierarchical silos, and looking more at the person and what they contribute.

So in service of #SmallBusinessSaturday & localism, here's a thread of my favorite used & independent bookstores around the country, some thoughts on what makes them great, plus a few some observations on which communities are most strongly supporting book culture.
Before beginning, please note I haven't visited every bookstore in the country, but I have visited quite a lot. My criteria is strange and I've never quite put it all into words, yet perhaps it will become apparent to those familiar with some of these spots.
#30: Yes Books, Portland ME. A terrific mess of a store, my only regret is that despite multiple visits I'm still afraid to move around some of the piles of books which crowd the aisles. They're steep, the books are weird, the art bizarre, I like it very much.
