#OnThisDay in 1942 - About 254,000 Warsaw Ghetto Jews (or at least 300,000 by different accounts) were sent to Treblinka during the Grossaktion Warschau. The vast majority was murdered there between Tisha B'Av (July 23) and Yom Kippur (September 21) of 1942.
During the Grossaktion, Jews were terrorized in daily round-ups, marched through the ghetto, and assembled at the Umschlagplatz station square for the so-called "resettlement to the East" (Umsiedlung).
From there, they were sent aboard overcrowded Holocaust trains to the extermination camp in Treblinka.

On this day in 1969 - Apollo 11 lunar module carrying Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins lands on the surface of the Moon.
Aldrin and Armstrong walk on the moon seven hours later.

The Romanov family and several of their retainers are executed by a Bolshevik firing squad #OnThisDay in the basement of the Ipatiev House in Siberia.

The family was shot, bayoneted and stabbed. The execution lasted about 20 minutes. Future investigations calculated that a possible 70 bullets were fired.

The pilot was Soviet celebrity Valery Chkalov, the most famous of “Stalin’s Falcons”. Chkalov was a son of a Volga boatman and a daring pilot.
The aircraft, ANT-25 was designed by the genius Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev. Revolutionary design, included the fuel tanks in the wings for the first time. The proportion of wings to the fuselage resembled a glider, allowing the plane to fly huge distances without refuelling.

Operation Forager, was the code name name of the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign which included the Battle of Saipan on June 15, 1944. At 0700 8,000 Marines from the 2nd & 4th Marine Divisions launched an amphibious assault on the heavily defended island. #USMC #DDaySaipan75
Dad was with 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division. Previously on Tarawa he commanded an Infantry platoon and was wounded by a sniper towards the end of the battle but managed to walk away. On Saipan he was on Battalion Staff as the S2 Officer and was not as lucky...

Many companies stall out at offering just utility. A lot of messaging and communication apps fall into this category. They can be massive companies, but competing on raw utility is a Hobbesian jungle.
The dream scenario for a social network is to transition from offering social capital to offering a ton of utility as well. Utility is less volatile than status. It's almost impossible to over-serve on utility.
Facebook would like to offer more utility to retain its users, following in the path of the gold standard here in WeChat, which is so integral to the daily lives of the Chinese that few could contemplate quitting the app the way some people quit Facebook.
