I never really thought of America as the home of the stiff upper lip, but my goodness did the crew of Apollo 11 & everyone back in Houston have stiff upper lips. Have courage, poetry & bathos ever been more powerfully fused?
Yes, until I watched Apollo 11 last week I hadn’t properly computed the incredible courage & coolness of the astronauts. Because I knew it all worked out, I just hadn’t engaged imaginatively with the strong likelihood that it might not have done.

One small step for man, a giant leap for mankind.
On this date in 1969, Apollo 11, landed on the Sea of Tranquility, Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon, followed by Buzz Aldrin, while the 3rd one Michael Collins was in the command module Columbia.
The awesome trio Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. Initially it was Jim Lovell, who was the Command Module Pilot, as Collins had a back problem. However Collins did recover back in time, and Lovell, became part of the back up crew.
The backup crew for Apollo 11 was
Jim Lovell- Led the ill fated Apollo 13 mission to the Moon, on which that movie was based.
William Anders- Took the iconic Earth Rise photograph
Fred Haise- Later became 6th person to land on moon.

I was eight when I learned the word ‘shrapnel.’

Our teacher told us that someone had brought a gun to Thurston High School. And gone to the cafeteria. And started shooting. She looked extremely sad, but her teachers’ aid looked sadder.

Her son went to Thurston.
She was crying, and told us that she would have to leave to go to the hospital. “He’s going to be OK,” she told us through tears, “it was just shrapnel.” And then she left.
Shrapnel is when something explodes, I told my mom later. It's when a bullet breaks apart and some of it hits you.
