If you actually care about STAR TREK (the original series, and its original movies), there is no way this cannot sound horribly, terribly wrong.
STAR TREK is about the true optimism and wonder of intergalactic space exploration, it's about serious sci-fi concepts (which is why DISCOVERY is just so awful) and intellectual themes. The last thing it's about is goofy pop culture zings and violent nihilism.
Even the pretty godawful STAR TREK V (the one directed by Shatner) understood this about Star Trek. Understood that it was about a quest for the unknown, and about mystic wonder about the great secrets of the universe. Not the difference btw Royales w/Cheese vs. Quarter Pounders.

Hard not to note the irony of Jane Mayer of all ppl writing a long defense of Al Franken, arguing he was unfairly forced to resign for an act of sexual harrassment that was actually *caught on film* plus other unverified accusations. She lacks shame. newyorker.com/magazine/2019/…
With Franken, it's all about 'context' and the politics of his accusers, and the opportunism of Republicans at the time, blah blah blah.

This is the woman who wrote the "Brett Kavanaugh may have flashed me in my sleep, I'm not sure but let's go with it" to tank his nomination.
The irony here is that I actually think (and have always thought) that Franken got a raw deal. But if there's any one person with absolutely no standing to write the case defending him and lamenting his unseemly political knifing, it's Jane f***in' Mayer.

Here is my number one recommendation for #HowIFightDepression, and I am 100% not joking: log off of Twitter. Off of Facebook. All social media. The internet altogether. Go outside. Go to a park and play with some doggos, or toss a ball to a kid.

It centers your perspective.
Technology is a barbiturate. You sometimes feel like it's a stimulant -- believe me, I know -- but over the long run it's an opiate rather than anything that truly invigorates. Cut the cord and spend time with real people and things instead. You'll feel better.
And if you don't have ppl in your life (sadly true for so many) you don't have to fall back on cheap passive technological entertainment. Learn a musical instrument. Read a book. Take up a craft or a hobby. Escape from this ever-constricting straitjacket. BE, in the real world.

Bernie's polling is decent, but that he does the 2nd-best against Trump (after Biden) is partly an artifact of name recognition. For instance, Buttigieg polls worse than Bernie vs. Trump. But Buttigieg actually has better favorables than Bernie among voters who know who he is.
It's certainly a messy relationship. Some liberals, including Bernie, have decent (though not great) polling. Some moderates don't. But favorability ratings, which allow voters to say they don't recognize a candidate, are a better way to assess this stuff than head-to-head polls.

You have to adjust for name recognition, though. Biden, at just south of 30 percent, is still something like a 2:1 underdog. And Bernie's position at 20 percent, as I wrote yesterday, is tenable but not great.
Per the chart above, Buttigieg's position is roughly as good as Bernie's on a "polls only" basis, or maybe a bit better. Empirically, you'd slightly prefer to be polling at ~10% with low name recognition than ~20% with high name recognition.

You know when bigots accuse you of the same bigotry they practice, as if they’ve won some sort of weird “ah-ha” moment? Like they just caught you trying to trick them?

You know what they’re doing right?
They think everyone is just like them, and that we’re all secretly pretending that we’re not bigoted, and that they’re the brave person for being honest.
So they have no problem accusing you of, say... oh, anti-semitism, for example... when they themselves are demonstrably anti-Semitic, because they don’t actually care about Jewish people.

They just care about being *right*, which is a virtue to them.

A few highbrow beers (although there's nothing *truly* highbrow on here) creep over into wineland, but that's sort of what you'd expect.

Muslims form the largest minority in India and yet when it comes to their portrayal they are either #mythified #stereotyped or #missing.
They are either the very bad guys or a good Vs bad lecturing into what Islam actually is. There is no portrayal of a “normal Muslim”
