An idiot GOP Rep (pardon the redundancy) from TN claims that 20% of food stamp recipients had more than $100K in assets, and many more than a million. That is nonsense. What is the source of these ‘statistics;? For benefits which pay about less than $1.50 per person, per meal?
If the govt really wants to save money, how about cutting out corporate welfare? In Defense alone - $125B per year. Let alone wasteful wars, etc. A govt which wastes $1T/year in tax cuts to the rich, & then cuts food stamps, sounds a lot conditions b/4 the French Revolution.
There’s about 3% fraud in food stamp, but it’s not for lacking of asset tests for eligibility, which range from $2,250-$3,000 in liquid & non-liquid assets, w/o considering debts. Far beyond dirt poor. It’s also under Dept Agriculture. Its purpose is to help American farmers.
He obviously has not met many poor and hungry people. I spent several years managing 3 feeding the homeless programs, as a volunteer. I did not see a single millionaire in the group.
