This was a really important scheme which takes rat-running traffic off small residential streets. Better air quality, safer streets for children and pedestrian and cyclists. It’s always good to listen but as councillors we need to do the right thing too.
So disappointed to see loud and angry people protesting on behalf of drivers but not speaking up for the majority who do not drive, who walk and cycle and scoot around unsafe streets.
I am also, to choose my words carefully, really extremely disappointed and surprised to see Labour councillors opposing active travel, improved safety and clean air in this way. Sincerely hope that they now plan to discuss benefits with residents and show some bravery.
Air quality is a social justice issue. Active travel is a social justice issue. If we take difficult but correct decisions to encourage people not to rat run through our streets that will benefit the people who have least in our borough. Doing this is our duty as Labour members.
I will just add that the scheme is ‘suspended’, not dropped. Still time for good conversations re the traffic data we collected, about the consultation we ran, about the problems experienced by residents, and how this scheme, or a revised version of it, will help #healthystreets
