I wonder what kinds of personnel questions would be illuminating, though? You can explore that kind of stuff in a long-form print profile of a candidate, but I don't see how you can make much headway on it on a debate stage.
"How are you going to use executive orders to advance your agenda if you have a GOP senate?" is a question I can see (barely) shining some light on actual presidenting. "What role is your chief of staff going to play in your WH and who's on your shortlist?" is not.
I understand the frustration, because folks in the political world DO tend to know a lot of stuff about the candidates as managers and leaders of staff that doesn't tend to break into public awareness.
But the way to use the debates to make that stuff clearer isn't to ask about it directly, it's by structuring debates to allow them to offer insight into candidates' temperament and acumen.
This stuff is absolutely important, and if you look closely enough in the right media coverage, you can find a fair amount of it. Not as much as I would like, but a fair amount.
